Our community herd
Since 2005, Cooperativa Terra Chã has been studying the impact of pastoralism on the preservation of biodiversity and the control of forest fires.
In 2008, the proposal for a partnership between Cooperativa Terra Chã and Quercus emerged, within the scope of the “Business and Biodiversity” initiative, for the “Conservation of the Red-billed Gralha in Serra dos Candeeiros” supported by Vodafone Portugal with resources the maintenance and expansion of extensive pasture areas for goat grazing.
In response to this challenge, Terra Chã created its community herd that remains today.
The activity of our herd has not only ensured the preservation of natural habitats, but also designed discontinuity bands that are crucial for preventing and reducing the risk of forest fires.
Feeding mainly on shrubs and aromatics, the milk and meat from our animals take on unique characteristics.
Cleaning 1800 kg per hectare/year of fuel load (biomass/bushes)
100 hectares of intervened area
Herd of 200 goats
The goats in our herd can be sponsored by people (individuals or groups). With this action, the godparents are contributing to the continuity and growth of this project.
In return, annually, Terra Chã makes available a set of products from the Herd.
Why community?
